General Info & Safety Tips

Natural Gas Is Safe When Used Responsibly

Natural gas is one of the safest and most efficient energy sources available, especially when delivered and used properly. At Yellowhead Gas Co-op, we adhere to strict provincial regulations, industry best practices, and ongoing system maintenance to ensure every connection is safe and secure.

From leak detection and pressure monitoring to regular inspections and emergency preparedness, safety is integrated into every part of our operations. But safety is also a shared responsibility.

By understanding how your system works and recognizing potential warning signs, you play a vital role in helping us prevent problems before they happen.

Together, we keep homes warm, businesses running, and communities protected all with confidence and care.

How Natural Gas Is Delivered

Natural gas reaches your home or business through a carefully managed system of underground infrastructure, designed with safety, reliability, and efficiency in mind.

Transmission to Distribution
Natural gas is first transported through large high-pressure transmission lines, then reduced to lower pressure levels at regulator stations before entering Yellowhead Gas Co-op’s local distribution network.

Underground Pipelines
From the distribution network, gas flows through a system of underground pipes that run beneath public roads, easements, and eventually to individual properties. These lines are precisely mapped and must never be disturbed.

Service Line to Meter
A smaller service line connects your building to the main distribution line. This pipe feeds gas directly into a gas meter–typically located on the outside of your home or business–where your usage is measured.

Inside Your Property
From the meter, gas enters your home and powers essential appliances like your furnace, water heater, fireplace, or stove.

Know the Signs of a Gas Leak

While natural gas is colourless and odorless in its natural state, Yellowhead Gas Co-op adds a safety chemical called mercaptan to give it a strong, unpleasant smell, often compared to rotten eggs or sulfur. This allows leaks to be identified quickly and easily.

Being able to recognize the signs of a leak could protect your property and more importantly, save lives.

Common Warning Signs Include

Smell

A strong sulfur or “rotten egg” smell near appliances, pipelines, or outside near your meter.

A hissing, roaring, or whistling noise coming from gas appliances, pipelines, or the ground.

  • Dirt blowing or spraying into the air
  • Bubbles forming in standing water
  • Dead or discoloured vegetation in an otherwise green area
  • A visible frost or mist cloud near gas equipment

If You Suspect a Gas Leak, Take These Steps Immediately

1.

Leave the area right away, do not attempt to locate the leak yourself.

2.

Avoid using electronics, do not flip switches, use phones, or start vehicles nearby.

3.

Call Yellowhead Gas Co-op from a safe distance.

4.

Keep others away until emergency crews arrive.

Your safety is our priority. We respond to gas leak reports 24/7 at no cost to you.
