Service Outages and Emergencies

Natural Gas Outages Are Rare, But We’re Always Prepared

Natural gas service is extremely reliable, but interruptions can still happen. Severe weather, third-party damage to pipelines, or system maintenance may cause temporary outages in parts of our service area.

If your service is unexpectedly disrupted, Yellowhead Gas Co-op is committed to restoring it quickly and safely, while keeping you informed every step of the way.

Wait For The Locates To Be Completed

Once your request is submitted, qualified technicians will visit your property if required mark the locations of underground lines using flags, stakes, or spray paint.

  • Do not begin excavation until all locates are completed
  • These markings are valid for a limited time, plan your project accordingly

What to Do If You Lose Service

If your gas appliances suddenly stop working or your home feels unusually cold, you may be experiencing a service interruption. Don’t panic, natural gas outages are rare and are resolved quickly.

Here’s what to do:

Check Your Gas Appliances

  1. See if the issue is limited to a single appliance.
  2. Verify that pilot lights are lit and appliance controls are in working order.

Inspect Your Gas Meter (If Safe)

  1. Look for signs of damage or tampering.
  2.  If your meter appears off or disconnected, avoid touching it and move to the next step.

Confirm with Neighbours

  1. If possible, check whether neighbouring homes are also experiencing loss of service.
  2. This helps determine whether the issue is isolated or part of a broader outage.

Call Yellowhead Gas Co-op Immediately

  1. Contact us to report the outage and receive instructions.
  2. We’ll assess the issue and dispatch a serviceman if needed.

Smell Gas? Evacuate and Call 911

  1. If you detect a strong rotten egg smell, leave the area immediately.
  2. Call 911 and Yellowhead Gas Co-op once you’re at a safe distance.
  3. Do not use electronics, start vehicles, or flip switches near the suspected leak.

If you’re unsure whether it’s a full outage or an appliance issue, it’s always best to call. Our team is happy to investigate and guide you through the next steps.

Natural gas is safe when used properly, but if something doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts and take immediate action. Yellowhead Gas Co-Op reponds to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What To Do In A Gas Emergency

If you smell gas, hear hissing near a line, or suspect there’s a leak or safety hazard, it’s critical to act quickly and carefully. Even if you’re unsure, it’s better to be sage and report the issue.

Here’s what to do:

Leave The Area Immediately

  1. Evacuate the building or site without stopping to gather your belongings.
  2. Ensure everyone, including pets, is at a safe distance from the source.

Avoid Creating Sparks or Flames

  1. Do not use cell phones, lighters, matches or start your vehicle near the area.
  2. Avoid flipping light switches or using electronic devices inside the building.

Do Not Try to Locate The Leak Yourself

  1. Leave all equipment and appliances as-is.
  2. Never attempt to shut off the gas or investigate the source on your own.

Call 911 First, Then Call Yellowhead Gas Co-op

  1. From a safe location, call 911 to report the emergency.
  2. Call Yellowhead Gas Co=Op for immediate assistance from our after-hours team

Wait for Clearance Before Re-Entering The Area

  1. Do not return to the area until emergency responders or Yellowhead Gas Co-op personnel have confirmed it’s safe.

Emergencies don’t happen often, but when they do, a calm, immediate response makes all the difference.

How Do I Recognize An Emergency?

Gas emergencies aren’t always obvious, but knowing the warning signs can help you act quickly. If you notice any of the following, treat it as an emergency and contact us right away:

The Smell of Natural Gas

A strong, sulfur-like or “rotten egg” smell indoors or outdoors is the most common sign of a leak.

Unusual sounds coming from pipes, gas meters, or underground could indicate escaping gas under pressure.

Broken and exposed gas lines, especially during construction or digging, most be reported immediately.

Flames or smoke near meters, pipelines or gas-powered appliances are extremely dangerous and require emergency response.

If your CO alarm goes off, leave immediately and seek medical attention if you feel dizzy, nauseous, or light-headed.

Striking or uncovering a gas line while digging, even without obvious damage, poses a serious safety risk and must be reported.

A sudden loss of heat or hot water may signal a system issue or safety shutdown that needs investigation.

Any signs of interference with your gas meter or line should be reported for inspection and safety assurance.

If you’re ever unsure whether something counts as an emergency, call us. It’s better to check and be safe.
